Local and Global Missions

And the King will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." - Matthew 25:40

WUMC is passionate in reaching out to help others!  We offer a variety of mission opportunities that take place in Mexico, Cuba and Africa.  For more information on any of the following mission opportunities, please contact Pastor Michael Whaley, Associate Pastor of Missions.

Making Donations to Mission Projects

We strive to make it very easy for you to make donations for any mission opportunity.  In the Narthex (front hallway) of our church, you'll find red bins located under the stairway.  Each bin is labeled with a mission name.  Items are picked up from the bins on a weekly basis.  Feel free to drop off your donations to the appropriately marked bins at any time.

LOCAL MISSIONS

Tracy Turkey Needs Your Help

Many of you may remember that Tracy Turkey visited us last year and helped us raise over $2000 to provide Thanksgiving turkeys to families in need through CCHASM, the Chesterfield Colonial Heights Alliance for Social Ministry.  Last year, with the help of Tracy Turkey and people like you, volunteers were able to provide over 1,895 residents with meal packages and turkeys.  CCHASM’s goal this year is to provide 1900 turkeys to local families in need.

Tracy Turkey realizes that everyone has had to tighten our belts this year but wants you to know that your donation of only $20 will provide a family with a Thanksgiving turkey and help CCHASM meet their goal.  If you would like to help, checks can be made payable to WUMC with “Tracy Turkey” in the memo section.  Donations can be placed in the offering plate or dropped off at the church office.  The deadline for Tracy Turkey donations is October 25th.

Mt. Moriah Soup Kitchen "FEEDING THE HUNGRY"

Are you looking for a new volunteer opportunity this year?  Why not join us at the Mt. Moriah Lunch Program?  Volunteers are needed monthly to cook an inexpensive casserole dish and servers are needed to serve meals. The soup kitchen is always in need of institutional size cans of green beans and mixed fruit. Our involvement in this mission is twice per month on the 2nd Thursday and the 4th Friday. If you are interested in this opportunity, contact "T" at clbutz@comcast.net  for the Thursday lunch program and Ronnie or Sue at rdvsue@comcast.net for the Friday lunch program. This ministry is open to individuals 12 and over. All those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  We would like to thank those who helped with our last visit by cooking, serving, or providing cans! Click here for directions.

WUMC Food Pantry

The WUMC food pantry is in need of canned meats, complete boxed meals and vegetables. This food pantry is used to offer assistance to families in our area who need immediate help. If you would like to help restock the food pantry, please leave donations in the red bin marked "WUMC food pantry". Any donation is appreciated.
Items you can donate include, but are not limited to:

    • Cereals
    • Canned chicken or tuna
    • Canned soups
    • "Meal in a box” dishes that include the meat
    • Individually wrapped packs of peanut butter or cheese crackers (Nabs)
    • Non-perishable lunch box items

Fishes & Loaves Ministry

We would like to thank everyone who has supported our Fishes & Loaves ministry, which benefits the pediatric ward at CJW. These donations help families of ill children who are reluctant to leave their children to eat meals. Through your donations, these parents have snack foods available in the waiting area. Donations of non-perishable microwavable items, cookies, crackers, etc. are appreciated and can be placed in the bin marked "Fishes & Loaves." This is a worthwhile ministry appreciated by many.

Sponsor a Child at the Child Rescue Centre - Africa

Click here for a CRC Update - The Torch Newsletter!

WUMC recently joined a partnership with several of our sister churches in Northern Virginia to support the Child Rescue Centre in Sierre Leone, Africa . The Child Rescue Center provides food, clothing, shelter, education, health care and a loving, nurturing environment to 46 (soon to be 70) children in Bo, Sierra Leone. The C.R.C. also supports 100 additional children living in family settings by paying their school tuition, providing school uniforms, purchasing school supplies and providing health care.  In addition to financial donations, volunteers can participate as pen pals with C.R.C. students and staff, participate in the sponsor-a-child program, and have the opportunity to join one of the periodic groups who travel to Sierra Leone to provide various types of direct support.  For more information about the Child Rescue Centre visit http://www.childrescuecentre.org/.

Through this new partnership, you have the opportunity to sponsor a child that currently lives at the CRC. A donation of $300 can help provide food, clothing, education and a safe place to live for a child.  When sponsoring a child, you will receive a picture of the child you are helping and have the opportunity to communicate through written letters. This is an excellent way to start a new year or honor a loved one by sponsoring a child in their name. For more information, contact Pastor Michael Whaley.
